In SmartField, we are now carrying out interviews with farmers from different regions and farm types in Denmark. All the way from Thisted to Sønderborg and to Gilleleje – covering crop growers, pig producers and cattle farmers, including both conventional and organic farmers.
The farmers are part of SmartField and they contribute both with their practical experience and feedback on climate initiatives as well as with data from their farms.
The purpose of the interviews is to learn more about:
- How do farmers make field level decisions that influence nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions?
- How do their production systems and planning processes work in practice?
- How do they assess different climate mitigation options and new technologies?
- What makes new decision support and monitoring systems useful and trustworthy from their perspective?
Farm data feeding into SmartField models
The farmers also share their farm data, which are used to develop and improve the models that calculate N₂O emissions at field scale in SmartField.
Farmers’ experiences and perspectives are crucial to develop solutions and improve mitigation measures that fit the realities of Danish agriculture. The activity data is essential to understand and improve the models that are used for estimating N₂O emissions and policy scenarios with various mitigation measures.
