This week, we welcome international partners from the CropSustaiN initiative to learn from the SmartField concept of measuring emissions and calculating the full N balance in the cropping system.
CropSustaiN is a research and innovation initiative launched by the Novo Nordisk Foundation in collaboration with CIMMYT and the program focuses on Biological Nitrification Inhibition-enabled (BNI) crops starting with wheat. The aim is to reduce fertilizer use and greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining productivity.
Klaus Butterbach-Bahl, Scientific Director in SmartField, explains:
- The current use of nitrogen fertilizer in arable production leads to loss of nitrogen through greenhouse gases and leaching. We need to find solutions to address this issue. We are excited to transfer knowledge and know-how from SmartField to CropSustaiN about how to measure and calculate the N balances. And we hope that this workshop will be a foundation for a continued collaboration.
We look forward to a good week. The pictures are from Today’s initial group work.
Thanks to Gretchen Gettel, Institut for Ecoscience - Aarhus Universitet, for setting the objectives for this workshop.
