Scientific Advisory Board
The Scientific Advisory Board provides counselling on the strategic scientific advancement of SmartField, ensuring the highest standards of research quality and fostering innovation. The Board is composed of five key opinion leaders within various research fields, collectively representing the scientific areas that constitutes SmartField.
The Scientific Advisory Board acts in an advisory capacity to the project director and scientific director and meets twice a year.
Professor Josette Garnier
Josette Garnier is a research director at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). Josette’s work includes assessing the environmental impacts of agricultural practices and urbanization on aquatic ecosystems. This involves the use of biogeochemical models to understand and predict changes in water quality and ecosystem health. She also actively works with policy makers and stakeholders to develop alternative management strategies for water-agro-food systems. Her research informs policy decisions aimed at improving water quality and promoting sustainable environmental practices.

Lektor David Kanter
David Kanter is Associate Professor of Environmental Studies at New York University and focuses on nitrogen pollution science and governance. David´s interdisciplinary approach uses methods such as earth system modeling, systems mapping and legal analysis to understand and manage nitrogen pollution. His work has had profound policy implications, influencing both national and international environmental regulations and agricultural practices.

Professor Claudia Wagner-Riddle
Claudia is professor in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of Guelph. She is an expert in environmental science and agro-meteorology, with a particular focus on greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural activities. Claudia's research has significantly advanced the understanding of how agricultural practices affect greenhouse gas emissions. Claudia's expertise has not only advanced scientific knowledge but has also influenced environmental policy and agricultural practices. Her research has led to the development of protocols to reduce nitrous oxide emissions and has fostered collaborations across Canada to promote green agricultural technologies.

Professor Stephen Ogle
Stephen Ogle is professor at Colorado State University where he is affiliated with the Department of Ecosystem Science and Sustainability in addition to the Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory (NREL). He is a leading expert in assessing the effects of land use and management impacts on biogeochemical processes, particularly in agricultural areas. He has made significant contributions to the field of environmental science, particularly in the quantification of greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural practices. He is the lead technical compiler of the U.S. National Greenhouse Gas Inventory for Agricultural Lands, which is reported to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Professor Wendy Yang
Wendy Yang is a professor in the Department of Plant Biology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Wendy studies the production and emission of N₂O from soils, particularly in agricultural systems. Her research explores the interconnected cycles of multiple elements, with a focus on how nitrogen and carbon dynamics are influenced by human activities and natural processes. A major component of her research is the development of innovative methodologies using tracer and natural abundance stable isotope techniques to measure soil dinitrogen emissions and overall greenhouse gas fluxes.
