When data forms the foundation for more accurate carbon accounting and reduction strategies, cross-border comparability is absolutely critical. But how do you standardise measurements in biological systems and open field conditions?
Bo Thiesson, Scientific Leader at Danish Technological Institute and part of SmartField, points out:
– To compare nitrous oxide emissions across countries, it’s not enough to simply look at the end result. We need meticulous control over the entire field process from chamber methodology and sensor sensitivity to raw data processing. Metadata provides the semantic context needed to turn isolated field measurements into reliable, comparable climate data, ensuring we aren’t simply comparing apples and oranges.
SmartField recently joined the international research partnership AgNUE, which brings together leading partners across Europe and the US. Through 12 selected supersites across both continents, the project will generate new, fully comparable insights into agricultural nitrous oxide emissions.
This week, AgNUE held a technical workshop where we in SmartField had the pleasure of sharing our experiences with:
- The design and operation of the two Supersites
- Methodologies for ensuring consistent data quality
- A practical demonstration of the technology at our Supersite in Aarhus
A huge thank you to our international colleagues for the strong technical discussions and knowledge sharing – the systematic work with data continues.
